If you have been supplied with a University Windows device and haven’t installed the 20H2 update yet, it will install automatically next week.

The installation takes between 1 and 2 hours to update and you won’t be able to interact with your device during this time. The rollout will start on Monday 2nd August and individuals may be impacted at anytime throughout the week.

How to check if you’ll be impacted

To find out which version of Windows your device is running, type winver in Cortana search bar and press the Enter key. Read the Microsoft guide Which version of Windows operating system am I running? for more information.

If it displays that you’re using Microsoft Windows Version 20H2, you have already installed the update and will not be impacted.

How to update your device in your own time before next week

To minimise disruption to your working day, we strongly recommend that you install the update in your own time before the 2nd August, if you haven’t done so already.

  1. Connect to the VPN
  2. Open Software Centre
  3. Select Operating systems
  4. Select STA OS – Windows 10 20H2 (x64) – Upgrade then Install

You’ll be able to use your laptop while this is downloading. However, once you install it, you won’t be able to use your laptop until the installation is complete which may take between 1 and 2 hours.

Once the update is complete, your laptop will restart automatically. Log into your laptop and connect to the VPN for a full working day.
