This GRADskills workshop is aimed at postgraduate tutors/demonstrators and academic/research staff. This interactive workshop, designed and delivered by Student Services, takes elements from the Scottish Mental Health First Aid training, and other mental health information, and puts this alongside the University policies to inform staff in understanding and addressing mental health issues within the University community. The workshop includes:

  • A focus on your role as a staff member within the institution – boundaries, confidentiality, keeping yourself safe.
  • The practical steps to take when you experience a difficult situation or student in distress, including who can help and who to refer to.
  • Dealing with requests for reasonable adjustments for teaching and assessment.
  • What you can do to improve mental health within our community.

The workshops aims to help you use practical knowledge and confidence to deal with difficult student situations, including those relating to mental ill-health; Provide effective help to a student experiencing distress; Better understand mental health issues; Know who to contact/refer onto and when to contact them when a difficult situation is experienced, and how to guide a student towards appropriate professional help; Refer to any University procedures relevant to difficult student situations.
