Writing a literature review in the Arts (14 March)

This GRADskills workshop is particularly aimed at doctoral students in the first year of their PhD. The literature review is a key component of a PhD: it motivates and contextualises the research question and launches the research. But developing a review is a complex task. Navigating seemingly limitless publications and shaping wide-ranging notes into a coherent text can feel overwhelming. This workshop offers practical ways of managing this process and laying the foundations for a review that meets the relevant criteria. By the end of the workshop, participants should be able to breakdown the task of writing a review into manageable portions, use templates in their reading and note-taking, develop a potential structure for their review in terms of strands, key publications and forward movement.The participants are required to bring along a printed copy of a short article in their field that that they are familiar with and are planning to discuss or refer to in the literature review.
