Student Interpreter Needed (Urdu/Punjabi/Cantonese)

I am looking for research assistants to help with my doctoral research.

The Project 

My doctoral research explores the social life of older adults from ethnic minority communities living in Fife and Edinburgh using semi-structured face-to-face interviews. Ethical Approval Code: GG16721.

The Role 

Some ethnic minority older adults may face language barriers and feel more comfortable talking in their native language. Therefore, you will visit older adults with me and act as an interpreter between me and the older interviewee. You will receive full training on what to do and ongoing support will be provided. This role will start As Soon As Possible.

Requirement 

  1. Fluent in one of the following languages (Urdu/Punjabi/Cantonese) and English. Preferred if Urdu/Punjabi/Cantonese is your mother tongue.
  2. 3rd or 4th year undergraduate or postgraduate students. Preferred if you have any interpreting/interviewing experiences.
  3. Study social science and is interested in qualitative research.
  4. Approximately 4 hours for each older participant.
  5. Willing to travel around the Fife OR Edinburgh. (The interviews may take place in older people’s homes or their local community centres.)
  6. Be flexible about the time. (We will arrange the interviews in advance when you, me and the older people are all available. But the older participants’ schedule is prioritised!)
