The Europaeum Spring School “Making Sense of Turbulent Times” invites applications from postgraduates interested in either presenting a 15-minute paper or contributing to the discussions. The Spring School will be held at the University of Oxford from 17-20 April 2024. Successful applicants will receive reimbursed travel costs, accommodation and meals, according to the Europaeum guidelines.

The twenty-first century has often seemed to be an Age of Crisis, including war, disease, financial crashes and climate change. So much so that it might now make sense to think of our times less in terms of endless rolling crises and turning points than of turbulence – a constant state of motion or commotion in which what’s going on around us is always buffeting all of us about. The Spring School will discuss the idea of turbulence and how it can be incorporated into our models for understanding society.

Participating students will explore themes related to turbulence in European history, politics, society, or economic or cultural production from a diachronic and/or multidisciplinary perspective. The Spring School especially welcomes proposals for papers addressing the theme of turbulence in relation to the following topics:

  • War and conflict
  • Politics and elections
  • News, information, and media
  • Demographics and migration
  • Health humanities

The deadline for applications is 21 January 2024. The Europaeum is a network of 19 leading research universities, based in Europe.
