The Irvine Atlas is the Undergraduate peer-reviewed academic journal of the School of Geography and Sustainable Development, with our next issue to be published at the end of this semester.

We at the Irvine Atlas believe art is an invaluable tool for questioning ourselves and the world, and as such also a valuable contributor to knowledge production in the disciplines of Geography and Sustainable Development. This is a call for your help in addressing these questions, and the chance for your artwork to be published in our upcoming April 2024 journal. Through your photography and drawing we can visualise sustainable futures and landscapes. Through your poems we can dissect the relationship between human-kind and nature. Any and all artforms are welcome!

CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK Building on the theme presented in our call for papers – which you can find here, in the first page -, the section of the journal dedicated to alternative media revolves around the concept of recreation:

RECREATION: Reclaiming the central role of artistic expression and storytelling as ways to produce and reframe knowledge in relation to personal and collective experiences of the world.

In addressing this, we invite you to play with the various understandings and interpretations of “RE-” (as in the prefix): “re-newable,” “re-growth”, “re-structure,” etc. Please submit your piece alongside a short explanation (50-200 words maximum) highlighting how your work links to this theme in the context of Geography/Sustainable Development (get creative!).

Please submit this form by 5pm on 19th March, and we will be in touch with you by the end of that week.

If you have any questions, please feel free to DM us on Instagram (@reirvineatlas), email us ([email protected]) or add them at the end of this form.
