Join our research project! The Commemorative Cultures VIP is a digital heritage web resource which collects, records, maps, and interprets data about American Civil War monuments across the United States, the UK, and internationally. Unlike other mapping sites, our project’s unique aim is to provide interpretive materials with accompanying images, literary texts, and archival documents for each monument recorded. We consider the different forms that Civil War monuments have taken, and work to redefine a traditional understanding of ‘public monuments’ more broadly by identifying a range of approaches to commemoration taken by marginalised groups, including formerly enslaved communities. Furthermore, we collaborate internationally with communities and have a partnership with Camp Nelson, Kentucky – a former Civil War Camp and national park. VIPs are an amazing way to make your CV stand out and can be taken at various credit loads for minimum one semester. Being part of this project will develop valuable research skills and provide an insight into working in public History – apply now! Even if you’re unsure about joining, please feel free to look at our interactive map to learn about Civil War commemoration, and maybe even submit your own monument!
