This study is being conducted as part of my, Ruiqing Yuan, PhD research study in the School of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of St Andrews.

Children (aged 9-12), adolescents (aged 13-16), and their parents/guardians will be invited to participate in a research project that involves two online sessions. Parents/guardians will be asked to answer several questions about their child’s demographic information (e.g., date of birth) and low mood experience via an 8-minute online survey on their device (phone or computer).

This study for your child involves two online sessions. The sessions will consist of two in-person Teams meetings using a computer with a camera and microphone turned on without a guardian being present. Parts of the meeting will be recorded for researchers’ further analysis.

  • Session 1 (30 minutes): In this session their child will be asked to complete 12 questions about their experience of low mood, and 9 questions about their attachment style. The researcher will then test their child’s vocabulary and matrix reasoning abilities by showing them some words and asking their child to give a brief explanation of the word. The experimenter will then show them some picture patterns that are not finished and ask their child to finish each one by picking the right answer from a few choices. The test of verbal and matrix reasoning will be recorded.
  • Session 2 (35 minutes): The child will be asked one question about their current mood. Then, the researcher will show the child 12 simple words and guide them to write down an autobiographical memory related to each word and then answer several questions related to their memory (e.g., positive emotions experienced).

Two £10 National Book Tokens e-Gift cards can be spent in bookshops instore and online including Waterstones. These will be sent to guardians via email after completing the two sessions.
