‘Mathematical Software’ VIP module – apply now for 2025-2026!
Student applications are open for the Vertically Integrated Project (VIP) module titled ‘Mathematical Software’ for Semester One and Semester Two of 2025-2026. This project is open to undergraduates from Mathematics and Computer Science.
There is no specific deadline, however applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and will be closed at the supervisor’s discretion. Hence we recommend that you apply at the earliest opportunity.
A Vertically Integrated Project is an ongoing, credit-bearing research project led by an academic supervisor and made up of a team of undergraduate students from any level of study (the ‘vertical’ aspect). The team of students can come from different subject areas with diverse backgrounds and skills across both arts and science. With VIPs, you can make your CV standout, work on a research project with staff and peers, and earn academic credits.
The Mathematical Software project is an opportunity for students to help develop sophisticated integrated software systems which would allow mathematicians to combine the latest algorithms to solve their problems without needing to understand the details of their implementation.
Examples of projects students have already worked on through this VIP:
- libsemigroups – C++ library for semigroups and monoids
- Semigroups package for GAP
- Digraphs package for GAP
