Rate of pay:                     £12.60 per hour paid by timesheet

Context

The Scottish Arctic Network (ScAN) started in 2022 and is built around the Scottish universities who are members of the University of the Arctic (UArctic). ScAN is a Regional Centre of UArctic and currently has a membership of around 350 individuals across Scotland. The Network is led by a Steering Group which is currently chaired by the Director of the Global Office at the University of St Andrews.

The Scottish Arctic Network Intern is an exciting opportunity to work closely with the Chair to manage Network business, liaising closely with members and stakeholders across Scotland and beyond. The Intern will be a research student based at the University of St Andrews, but will work collaboratively with all Steering Group and wider Network membership.

Key duties

The Scottish Arctic Network Intern will undertake project work as well as network administration and support. Tasks will include:

  • Providing administrative support to the Steering Group meetings including collating agendas, papers and minutes;
  • Maintaining the network member list, adhering to principles of good data governance;
  • Working with the Chair and wider Steering Group to manage ScAN funding, including proactively identifying funding opportunities; promoting these to the network; supporting funding applications on behalf of the network, and distributing funds held by St Andrews as the network Chair;
  • Assisting with ScAN events including planning and logistical support;
  • Working with the Communications Lead to enhance ScAN’s web and social media presence, including liaising regularly with members for stories, blog posts and other updates;
  • Producing ScAN’s monthly newsletter;
  • Assistance with the production of any ScAN publications or materials;
  • Supporting the Chair with UArctic liaison and reporting;
  • Supporting the network’s engagement with students across Scotland;
  • The Intern may be asked to support other network activities and projects as appropriate.

This Internship forms part of a structured development programme. The successful applicant will benefit from:

  • A structured induction when they begin in post;
  • Regular planning and review meetings with their line manager;
  • Ongoing mentoring from their line manager;
  • Wider support from the Global Office team as well as the ScAN Steering Group.

Person Specification

Essential

  • An undergraduate degree;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills;
  • Good knowledge of Mircosoft applications, in particular Excel and Powerpoint;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with a commitment to the provision of excellent customer service;
  • Excellent organisational and planning skills;
  • Attention to detail in administration, data and responding to queries;
  • Willingness to learn new skills and be adaptive.

Desirable

  • Research interests that align with ScAN (i.e. an interest in Arctic research and policy);
  • Ability to update a WordPress website;
  • Experience of working on projects with an international dimension.
